The idea for Overfiftieshouseswap came about when I stopped working full time and realized that holidays and long weekends away had become "frills" which were not so easily affordable. With a passion for the country of my birth and a longing to explore it in more depth, the irony was that now I had the luxury of more free time, I was not able to take full advantage of the opportunities open to me.
Researching the myriad house swap sites with disappointing results, I came to the conclusion that what I really wanted was to exchange my small but much loved home (see SHS4) with people of my own age, whose properties were similarly well presented and maintained.
Overfiftieshouseswap was born from this lack of an appropriate site for my needs, and exists not just for those for whom budgetary considerations make it an appealing option, as in my case, but for anyone who fits the criteria and wants to share their lovely house and others' for the sheer fun of it. It does not have to be the mainstay of my (or your) holiday plans; it can just be for those extra little trips away which make life so enjoyable.
It is hoped that those people who join will make genuine friendships within the membership and that a true sense of community will flourish based on shared experience.
